The Giant - Cerne Abbas

Dave’s walk: “I had a super dog walk recently at Cerne Abbas. A circular route that took me from the magical well in the churchyard, up to explore the "Giant" and then on to the pretty hamlet of Upcerne. A video of the walk (which includes a 2 min clip covering Cerne Abbas itself) can be seen above” Dave Ford from our Dog Friendly Dorset group

Nicky and Merlin's walk: “we parked in the village hall carpark and walked downhill. To the left is the ascent to the Giant but we forked right and walked along the stream and into the village where there was a Kingfisher sitting in the branch of a tree!

The Abbey is simply stunning and you literally step out of time. The Willow by the water is very special too. There is a gate into the graveyard and a sacred spring to tie a ribbon or leave a wish. Quite magical. This was used as a fertility spring…

Walking up the hill to the Giant you cannot access or see it as it is fenced in but the views from the hill are breathtaking. Back at the village we enjoyed lovely food at an old pub called the Royal Oak on the corner. Dog friendly of course!”

Judith’s walk: Entering the village via the giant take the first left and follow the walking signs for the giant walk. Follow the path around the hillside until you come to a stile. Go over the stile and continue straight ahead.

For a slightly shorter walk take the first gate on the right and make your way down the hill to the village. The last bit might be a bit slippery in winter.

When you enter the field at the bottom watch out for sheep. It is only a short distance. For a slightly longer walk - after the stile above, take the second gate on the right and follow the track to the village. This might be a kinder gradient but we tend to avoid this field as it does often have cows in it.

Length of walk: 3 miles for the longer route

Closest food/drink stop and tell us why you recommend it:

“I can highly recommend The New Inn pub at Cerne Abbas, they let dogs in the restaurant & bar & have some dog friendly rooms too if you want to stay. It's my favourite pub. The food is amazing” Love, Melanie Nicolson, Daisy (Bearded Collie) & Tetley (Springer spaniel ) xx
